Paint Protection Film (PPF) is not cheap — but it is significantly cheaper than repainting your car (well).

Pricing varies depending on coverage, vehicle, film quality (this is a topic for another day), and installation standard.

Why People Get Confused About PPF Pricing

Most shops don’t explain pricing properly.

You’ll often see vague estimates, “from” pricing, or no pricing at all. Heck, we have it on this website too

That makes it hard to understand what you’re actually paying for, which is why we are breaking it down below.

Typical PPF Pricing (Gold Coast)

While every car is different, most installs fall into these ranges:

- Full front (bonnet, bumper, guards, mirrors) → entry level
- Full front + sides (popular with 4x4s) → mid range
- Full vehicle wrap → premium investment

The key difference isn’t just vehicle size — it’s the level of protection and labour involved.

What Actually Affects the Cost

This is where pricing really changes.

1. Film Quality

Not all PPF is the same.

Higher-end films offer better clarity, stronger self-healing, and longer lifespan.

Reputable brands provide better support for the installer as well, in the event of an issue. If you think the price is surprisingly cheap, there is likely a reason, the most common being what we call "unproven film". Again, another post on that to come, it's a doozy.

2. Vehicle Complexity

A flat bonnet is simple.

Modern bumpers with vents, curves, and edges require significantly more time and skill.

Trim pieces tend to be small, but large in numbers. That in itself takes time. e.g. a Golf R Mk8.5 front bumper contains over 38 Pieces to get full coverage.

3. Paint Preparation

Before PPF is installed, the paint needs to be properly prepared.

This can include decontamination, light polishing, or targeted correction where needed.

This ties directly into whether paint correction is actually required before PPF.

4. Installation Quality

This is the biggest factor most people overlook.

A proper install means wrapped edges, minimal visible lines, and a clean finish. This is generally achieved with a "hybrid install", which means it is a computer cut template that has been modified. This keeps knife trimming on the car to a minimum, but provides maximum coverage where possible

In my opinion, the installer makes much more of a difference to the job than the film brand does, and that is a big portion of what you pay for as well

Why Cheap PPF Ends Up Costing More

Cheap installs often fail early. This often comes from it being purchased direct from factory, so not tested in a wide scale, which in turn means slower responses for warranty claims.

Common issues include lifting edges, shrinking film, and poor alignment.

This leads to removal and reinstallation — costing more overall.

Cost vs Value

PPF isn’t just about price.

It prevents repainting, protects against stone chips, and reduces the need for ongoing correction.

Over time, that adds up.

Then there is resale value. A pristine car will always make a better first impression than one not looked after.

How This Compares to Other Options

Ceramic coating improves gloss and makes cleaning easier, but does not stop physical damage.

PPF physically protects the paint and prevents real-world damage.

So… How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The honest answer is that it depends on your vehicle and the level of protection you want.

Anyone giving a fixed price without getting a lot of information about your car and discussing your requirements/expectations are just guessing. A good example is that a Toyota 250 Prado Altitude will cost around $1000-1500 LESS than a Prado Kakadu, because it has less colour coded plastics requiring coverage.

Same car, but the price changes dramatically based on variant.

Final Thought

You’re not paying for film.

You’re paying for protection, install quality, and long-term results.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) protects your car from physical impacts. Ceramic coating does not.

They do completely different jobs.

What Most People Think

A lot of people are told:

- Ceramic coating protects your paint
- It prevents scratches
- It’s the best option

That’s not accurate.

What PPF Actually Does

PPF is a physical layer applied to your paint. Think screen protector for your phone, but on your car

It:
- Absorbs stone chips
- Prevents scratches
- Self-heals from light damage
- Takes the abuse instead of your paint

What Ceramic Coating Actually Does

Ceramic coating is a liquid layer that bonds to the paint.

It:
- Protects from UV damage (PPF also does this, way better)
- Makes washing easier
- Repels water and dirt

It does NOT:
- Stop stone chips
- Prevent scratches
- Protect against physical damage

Why This Matters

If your goal is:

- Keeping your car looking new
- Preventing physical damage

Then only one option actually does that.

Real-World Example

If you drive on the highway:

- Ceramic coating → your paint still gets chipped
- PPF → the film takes the impact

What Paint Correction Actually Is

Paint correction is often misunderstood. Most people think it “removes scratches”. In reality, it does something very different.

Paint correction is the process of removing a controlled amount of clear coat to level out defects in the paint.

Your paint system consists of:
- Primer
- Base coat (colour)
- Clear coat (the protective, glossy layer)

When your car gets scratched, the damage sits inside the clear coat, potentially the base coat or primer if it is deep enough.

Correction works by reducing the surrounding clear coat until it matches the depth of the scratch.

What’s Actually Happening to Your Paint

Think of it like this:

- A scratch is a low point
- The surrounding paint is higher
- Machine polishing removes the high points to level the surface

Once level, light reflects evenly again — and the defect disappears.

But nothing was “filled” or “pulled out”.

Why This Matters

Every time you correct paint, you are:

- Removing clear coat
- Reducing paint thickness
- Using up a finite resource

Clear coat does not grow back. This means you have a finite number of polishing cycles before you cause irreversible damage. This in itself is good enough reason to opt for some form of paint protection.

Not All Scratches Should Be Removed

Some defects are too deep to safely remove. If you chase them completely, you risk:

- Burning through clear coat
- Premature paint failure
- Needing a respray

A proper correction isn’t about removing everything. It’s about knowing where to stop.
